The Best Family Holiday We've Ever Had – Thank You, Amazing Borneo

My family (4 adults, 2 teens) spent our two-week holiday in Sabah/Borneo. At first, we were unsure about how to travel, how to organize the trip, and which travel agency to choose. Finally, we decided to engage Amazing Borneo Travel Agency to plan our tour—and that turned out to be our best decision. Anthony Wong was our salesperson, and he did an excellent job. We were able to discuss everything during the planning period, including the sights, hotels, and transfers, and we ended up with the programme of our dreams.

We were also accompanied by a guide, Joel, who stayed with us for all 14 days. We can honestly say that he is the best guide in Sabah. During our trip, we stayed in Kota Kinabalu, from where we visited Kinabalu National Park, the Bajau sea gypsies on Gaya Island, Mari Mari Cultural Village, and Poring Hot Springs. Then we travelled to Sandakan to visit the orangutans and sun bears. Our next stop was the Kinabatangan River, where, thanks to Joel’s guidance, we were able to see everything possible.

The highlights of the trip for us were the Danum Valley at the Field Centre, island hopping from Semporna, and our stay at Mabul Island Water Bungalows. The Danum Valley tours were organized by ThinkingBig Adventures (Afif Bong), and they were fantastic. We even enjoyed our experience at Mabul Island Water Bungalows more than a previous trip to the Maldives a few years ago.

It’s hard to find the words to express how we felt. We have visited many countries around the world, and we can confidently say that this was the best trip we’ve ever had. Thank you, Amazing Borneo!

Kudos to the Amazing Borneo team

I would like to share some of the wonderful experiences we had during our 5-day trip (10-14 June 2024) in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. Throughout the trip, we were joined by Emily and Hang from Amazing Borneo Tours (ABT), who not only took good care of us but also showered much love on the younger ones in our group.

We started our first morning with white water rafting at Kiulu. The staff at the centre were friendly and helpful. Mischief took over once we were in the water, with a bottle of 'paddle splash' getting everyone wet even before hitting the rapids. It was much fun for the young as well as the young at heart. It was a good morning of relaxation before settling down at Grace Lodge at Park HQ to prepare seriously for the summit climb the next day.

We were so glad that ABT managed to secure for our group (7 adults including Emily and Hang + 4 under-16s) four very experienced guides/porters. They were not only professional but also very patient with us. On the ascent, we had Safrey leading the group, with Rony and Agustine taking care of the laggers. My wife and I started to drift behind after the 3.5 km mark. We must thank Rony and Agustine for their patience and helpful guidance, enabling us to reach Laban Rata Resthouse with some daylight to spare.

At 2:30 am, we began our journey to Low’s Peak at 4095 meters. Again, my wife and I were the last to reach the Sayat-Sayat checkpoint (luckily before the 5:30 am cut-off time). From there on, Rony, our mountain guide, was constantly by our side, urging us to take the next step and not give up. We definitely owe our successful summit to him. Though we missed the sunrise at the peak, the view was still spectacular.

That's not all, folks! Climbing up was just half the journey, and climbing down was definitely more challenging than climbing up! It took my wife and me more than 10 hours to reach Timpohon Gate from Laban Rata Resthouse, while the rest of the group took about 4 hours. This time, we were lucky to have Safrey and Agustine at the back with us. Again, their patience and continual encouragement were greatly appreciated.

To celebrate and reward ourselves, we booked the North Borneo Sunset Dinner Cruise. It was a fitting close to our adventurous vacation in Borneo, with live music, dancing, and good food. Kudos to the Amazing Borneo team for making this vacation a most memorable experience.

PS. Do check out Borenos Chicken while you are in Kota Kinabalu. The best fried chicken in town!

Everything was perfectly arranged

Absolutely recommend Amazing Borneo! They made our climb up Mount Kinabalu fantastic. From the comfortable accommodation to the excellent customer service, everything was perfectly arranged. We felt safe and looked after throughout the entire trip. Many thanks to Anthony Wong, my dad met him at a Matta Fair and he has been extremely helpful for going the extra mile and making our trip truly unforgettable! We ended up booking 2 trips with him, one for our climbing expedition and the other for my parents (4D3N KK & Kundasang-Package C). We all had an amazing time with Amazing Borneo! Thank you for showing us how beautiful Sabah is and we will be back soon! Don't hesitate to book with Amazing Borneo!

Thanks to Amazing Borneo, we had a great time and truly enjoyed our vacation in Sabah. We booked a 5D4N package that included white water rafting, a Mount Kinabalu climb, and the North Borneo sunset dinner cruise. Everything, from the pre-trip communication to transportation and activity coordination, was professionally handled. The detailed booking itinerary sent prior to the trip was especially useful for preparing for the climb.

Our trip started with Kiulu White Water Rafting. This was a fun and relatively easy ride down the river, suitable even for small kids, as we had 4-6 year-olds in our group. There were even shower facilities at the end of the activity to wash up before the buffet lunch.

For the Mt. Kinabalu climb, the guides assigned to us were very friendly, patient, and spoke English well. The two briefings by the guides—one before the start of the climb and the other before the summit climb the next morning—were helpful. The climb up to Panalaban was moderately hard; you just need to pace yourself and you should be fine. The weather was good, and the climb to the summit was beautiful with a clear sky full of stars. Coming down was easier on the heart but more strenuous on the knees. I advise bringing two walking poles, especially if you have weak knees.

The sunset dinner cruise was a nice and relaxing end to the trip. The buffet spread was good, and the food was nice. We did not get to see the ‘egg yolk’ setting sun, but the colorful clouds at dusk and the view of Kota Kinabalu waterfront at night were beautiful. There was a live band performance on board, and guests were even encouraged to join in the dance.

Overall, it was a very enjoyable trip, and I look forward to visiting Sabah again and having Amazing Borneo organize my trip.

Amazing Borneo Tours smashed it out of the park!!!

We booked our two-week holiday with Anthony from Amazing Borneo Tours, who was truly amazing, thorough, and professional. We started our adventure by climbing the Mount Kinabalu summit, which was tough but well worth the 1:30 am night hike to enjoy the magical sunrise. Unbelievable!!!

We then headed to Lankayan Dive Resort for two spectacular days of snorkelling with turtles and tropical fish amongst the beautiful and thriving coral.

We then headed to Borneo Rainforest Lodge for three days of jungle trekking, canopy walks, and waterfall swims, enjoying the orangutans, monkeys, hornbills, kingfishers, flying squirrels, and all the other unique creepy crawlies with our fabulous and knowledgeable guide Emmanuel.

We then headed to Sepilok for the orangutan and sun bear conservation centres. After having seen all the animals in their natural habitat, this was an important trip to see the result of palm oil deforestation and its impact on these species.

Our trip ended on the Kinabatangan River at the Sukau Rainforest Lodge which was outstanding. We enjoyed a herd of 30 elephants basking in the river amongst the crocodiles, proboscis monkeys and countless amazing birds, lizards and other rainforest creatures guided by wonderful expert Fahran.

Anthony at Amazing Borneo Tours could not have planned a better holiday for our family and even managed to coordinate flights for 2 of our kids coming from Thailand and Bali from their respective gap year of travels. He continually went well over the call of duty to provide us with this special and adventurous trip of a lifetime!! We would highly recommend Amazing Borneo Tours!!

Great time in Borneo thanks to Joey!

I want to thank Joey from Amazing Borneo Tours in Kota Kinabalu. She was very helpful in organising all of my tours for my time in Borneo and keeping me updated with any changes! I did several tours in Kota Kinabalu, Sandakan, Semporna, and Mulu National Park, all of which were awesome and easily organized with Joey's help even though I was travelling solo!
