Sample Itinerary

Day 1

Sandakan / Yacht Club Jetty / Abai Kinabatangan Wetland Resort / Kinabatangan River Cruise / Night Walk

Meet at Sandakan Airport or your hotel lobby for a transfer to the jetty.

Depart by boat from the Sandakan Yacht Club Jetty to the Kinabatangan Wetlands Resort in Abai, Kinabatangan. The 1.5-hour boat ride takes you across Sandakan Bay, passing the historic Berhala Island. Known for its prominent sandstone cliffs, Berhala Island holds historical significance as a World War II site.

Upon arrival at KWR, check in to your longhouse cabin and enjoy a cup of coffee paired with local banana fritters. You’ll then receive a briefing about the lodge and the activities planned for your stay. Enjoy your free time at leisure.

Later, board a smaller boat for a scenic cruise along the Kinabatangan River in search of wildlife. Marvel at the stunning river landscape as the sun sets. Weather permitting, continue the experience by observing the enchanting fireflies shimmering in the evening light before cruising back to the resort.

Dinner will be served in the common hall.

After dinner, equip yourself with a headlamp or torchlight and join a guided stroll along the boardwalk. Spot fascinating insects or other nocturnal wildlife that emerge after dark.

Day 2

Morning Cruise / Local Fishing Village / Kinabatangan River Cruise / Night Walk

Start your day with an early morning cruise to observe wildlife and birdlife. Cruise to the nearby ox-bow lake, Danau Pitas, to explore its serene surroundings. Savor your packed breakfast while soaking in the natural beauty of the area.

Continue your journey with a visit to the local fishing village, Kampung Abai. Interact with the friendly Orang Sungai (River People) and observe their daily activities in this quaint fishing village. Return to the lodge for some rest and a delicious lunch.

Spend the afternoon exploring the resort grounds, discovering fascinating plants and insects. Enjoy birdwatching within the area for a relaxing experience.

In the late afternoon, embark on another river adventure, cruising along small tributaries in search of more wildlife.

After dinner, head out for a night cruise along the smaller tributary rivers, keeping an eye out for nocturnal wildlife.

Return to the lodge and unwind for the night.

Day 3

Check Out / Boat Return to Sandakan / Sandakan Hotel or Airport

After breakfast, check out and board a boat for your journey back to the Sandakan Jetty. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel or Sandakan Airport for your onward destination.
