The journey continues to Selingan Turtle Island, where guests may witness turtle nesting, ranger-led conservation work and baby turtle release, depending on natural turtle activity and park procedures. From there, travel inland for a deeper Kinabatangan River safari with three guided river cruises, a jungle walk and two nights at Bilit Adventure Lodge, before ending with Sandakan city highlights. This 5D4N itinerary is ideal for travellers who want a fuller Sabah wildlife experience across rainforest, island and river habitats.

Selingan Turtle Island

Located about 40 kilometres off the coast of Sandakan in the Sulu Sea, Selingan Turtle Island is part of Turtle Islands Park and one of Sabah’s most important marine turtle conservation areas. The island is best known as a nesting site for endangered green turtles and hawksbill turtles, making it one of the most unique wildlife experiences in the Sandakan region.

An overnight stay is recommended because turtle landings usually happen after dusk. During the evening programme, guests may have the chance to learn about turtle conservation efforts and witness park rangers carrying out activities such as egg collection, turtle tagging and the release of baby turtles into the sea, depending on natural turtle activity. During the day, visitors can relax by the beach, snorkel in clear waters or explore the island’s peaceful coastal setting before the evening conservation experience begins.

Kinabatangan River

The Kinabatangan River is Sabah's longest river, stretching over 560 kilometres across eastern Borneo before flowing into the Sulu Sea. Recognised as one of Malaysia's premier wildlife destinations, the Lower Kinabatangan is home to one of the highest concentrations of wildlife in Southeast Asia and is part of the Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary, a protected network of rainforest and wetlands.

Despite its accessibility from Sandakan, the Kinabatangan River remains one of the best places in Borneo to observe wildlife in its natural habitat. Guided river cruises offer opportunities to spot the Borneo Big Five and other iconic species such as proboscis monkeys, Bornean orangutans, Bornean pygmy elephants, saltwater crocodiles, hornbills, kingfishers and a remarkable diversity of birdlife. Early morning and late afternoon are widely regarded as the best times for wildlife viewing, making these cruises the highlight of any Kinabatangan adventure.

Bilit Adventure Lodge

Situated in Kampung Bilit along the banks of the Kinabatangan River, Bilit Adventure Lodge is approximately 2.5 hours from Sandakan, 2 hours from Sepilok and 30 minutes from Gomantong Cave. Its location places guests within one of Sabah's richest wildlife habitats, making it an excellent base for exploring the Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary.

The lodge offers comfortable air-conditioned rooms with attached bathrooms, open-air dining surrounded by tropical gardens, and a peaceful rainforest setting where wildlife is often seen around the property. Operated entirely by local staff from the surrounding community, Bilit Adventure Lodge embraces responsible tourism by creating employment opportunities for local families, while selected optional activities and on-site purchases contribute directly to the village economy.

Sepilok Jungle Resort

Located along Jalan Rambutan at Mile 14, Sepilok, approximately 17.5 kilometres from Sandakan Airport, Sepilok Jungle Resort is surrounded by landscaped gardens and tropical rainforest. The resort is around a 10 to 15-minute walk from both the Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre and the nearby Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre, making it a convenient overnight base for visiting Sepilok's main wildlife conservation attractions.

The resort's buildings are spread across a large, green compound and connected by walkways running through gardens and around its lakes. Guests may spot gibbons, hornbills, butterflies and other wildlife while moving between their rooms and the resort's shared facilities. Accommodation ranges from fan-cooled dormitory beds and standard fan rooms to air-conditioned standard, superior and deluxe rooms, with private balconies available in the deluxe category.

Banana Café & Restaurant serves Malaysian and Western dishes, while the resort's facilities include an outdoor swimming pool, children's pool and jacuzzi for guests returning from a day of exploring Sepilok.

Day 1

Sandakan / Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre / Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre / Rainforest Discovery Centre / Sepilok Jungle Resort

08:00 hrs / 09:00 hrs: Pick up from Sandakan city hotels at 08:00 hrs or Sepilok Jungle Resort at 09:00 hrs, then begin your wildlife journey in Sepilok, one of Sabah’s most recognised conservation areas.

Visit the Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre, where rehabilitated orangutans are given the opportunity to develop essential survival skills in a protected rainforest setting. Walk along the boardwalk to the outdoor nursery and feeding platform, where orangutans may be seen feeding, climbing or moving through the trees.

Continue to the nearby Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre, dedicated to the rescue and conservation of the world’s smallest bear species. From the viewing platforms, observe sun bears as they climb, forage and explore their forest enclosures while learning more about the conservation work being done to protect them.

Enjoy lunch before continuing to the Rainforest Discovery Centre, located within the Kabili-Sepilok Forest Reserve.

Explore the Rainforest Discovery Centre and experience its famous canopy walk, offering a bird’s-eye view of the surrounding rainforest. This is a great opportunity to appreciate Sepilok’s forest ecosystem from a different perspective, with chances to observe birds, trees and other rainforest life from above.

Enjoy dinner and overnight at Sepilok Jungle Resort, surrounded by the peaceful sounds of nature.

Day 2

Sepilok / Selingan Island

Take time to enjoy the island’s peaceful coastal setting and learn more about its role as a protected nesting site for endangered green and hawksbill turtles.

After dinner, attend a turtle conservation briefing or video presentation before waiting for further instructions from the park rangers. As turtle landings usually happen after dusk, guests may have the chance to witness turtle nesting, egg collection, turtle tagging and the release of baby turtles into the sea, depending on natural turtle activity and park procedures.

Day 3

Selingan Island / Sandakan City Tour / Bilit Adventure Lodge / Kinabatangan River Cruise

Continue to Puu Jih Shih Buddhist Temple, known for its hilltop views overlooking Sandakan Bay, followed by St. Michael’s and All Angels Church, one of the oldest stone churches in Sabah.

You will also visit the Central Market, where fresh seafood, produce and local activity offer a glimpse of everyday life in Sandakan, before stopping at Agnes Keith House, a heritage museum linked to North Borneo’s colonial past. The tour ends with refreshments at the English Tea House, set in a scenic hilltop location.

After lunch, travel overland to Bilit, located along the Kinabatangan River. The journey takes you through rural landscapes before arriving at one of Sabah’s richest wildlife habitats.

Day 4

Morning River Cruise / Jungle Walk / Afternoon River Cruise

06:00 hrs: Wake early for your second Kinabatangan River cruise, when the river is often calm and the rainforest begins to come alive. Return to Bilit Adventure Lodge for breakfast.

Head into the riverine rainforest on a guided jungle walk. Enjoy lunch at the lodge and take some time to rest during the quieter afternoon hours.

16:00 hrs: Embark on your third guided Kinabatangan River wildlife cruise. With another afternoon on the river, you have more opportunities to observe wildlife activity in the forest canopy and along the riverbanks.
