Mount Sinsing, standing at 2,603 meters, is in the Trusmadi Range near Tambunan and is known as Sabah’s third-highest peak. The trail is more rugged and challenging than Mount Kinabalu, rewarding hikers with untouched rainforest scenery and breathtaking views from the summit. 

As you climb, you’ll pass through cool montane and mossy forests filled with orchids, pitcher plants, and other unique flora and fauna found only in Borneo’s highlands. The peaceful surroundings and fresh mountain air make it a perfect escape for nature lovers.

Mount Kaingaran (2,820 m) 

Mount Kaingaran, standing at 2,820 meters, is located near Mount Sinsing within the Trusmadi Range and is known as Sabah’s fifth-highest peak. This hidden gem offers a more remote and adventurous experience for hikers seeking something off the beaten path. 

The trail is steeper and more demanding than Mount Sinsing, making it ideal for experienced climbers or those looking to conquer both peaks in a twin-summit adventure. Along the way, you’ll trek through cool, misty montane forests rich in unique plants and wildlife.

Day 1

Kota Kinabalu / Tambunan / Basecamp 1

09:00 Hrs: Meet your driver at Kota Kinabalu International Airport or your hotel in Kota Kinabalu and begin your scenic drive to Tambunan, a charming highland town about three hours away. 

Upon arrival, some groups may be required to stop by the Sabah Forestry Department Office for permit registration and a short safety briefing before heading to Basecamp 1. 

The journey continues through rolling hills and peaceful mountain villages before you arrive at Basecamp 1. Settle into your shared hut accommodation and unwind in the cool mountain air. Enjoy a simple, hearty dinner prepared by the local community as the mist drifts across the hills. 

Overnight at Basecamp 1 (Shared Hut).

Day 2

Basecamp 1 / Mount Sinsing Trail / Erick Basecamp

Morning: After breakfast, collect your packed lunch and prepare for an exciting day on the trail. 

07:30 Hrs: Hop aboard a 4WD vehicle to the trailhead, where your adventure begins. The climb up Mount Sinsing (2,603 m) leads you through lush mossy forest alive with orchids, pitcher plants, and ferns glistening with morning dew. 

The trek covers around 6 to 7 km (approximately 3 to 4 hours) and features a mix of gradual and steep sections before reaching Erick Basecamp. 

Arrive by afternoon and take time to rest, breathe in the crisp mountain air, and soak up the tranquil surroundings. As evening falls, enjoy a warm dinner at the basecamp while the forest hums with nighttime sounds. 

Overnight at Erick Basecamp (Shared Hut). Temperatures can drop below 10°C at night, so bring warm layers.

Day 3

Mount Sinsing Summit / Mount Kaingaran Basecamp

03:00 Hrs: Wake up early for a light supper before beginning your summit climb under the starry sky. 

Begin trekking at 03:30 Hrs to reach the summit of Mount Sinsing just before sunrise. The effort is rewarded with a breathtaking panoramic view of Mount Kinabalu, Mount Trusmadi, and the Crocker Range as the morning light spreads across Sabah’s highlands. 

After enjoying the view and taking your summit photos, descend to Erick Basecamp for brunch and a short rest. 

Continue your descent to the trailhead, then transfer back to Basecamp 1 and onward to Tambunan Town. 

After a brief stop to freshen up, continue your journey back to Kota Kinabalu (approximately 3 hours). Relax and take in the scenic countryside as you reflect on your mountain adventure.

Day 4

Mount Kaingaran Summit / Descent / Tambunan / Kota Kinabalu

Early Morning: Begin your final ascent before dawn to the summit of Mount Kaingaran (2,820 m). The climb takes approximately 2 hours and rewards you with a stunning sunrise view over Sabah’s highlands, including Mount Kinabalu and Mount Trusmadi in the distance. 

Descend to Kaingaran Basecamp for brunch, then continue trekking down to the trailhead. 

Meet your driver and begin the return journey to Tambunan, before continuing onward to Kota Kinabalu (approximately 3 hours’ drive). Relax and enjoy the scenic route as you reflect on your incredible double-summit adventure.

  • Please bring your own refillable water bottle to reduce plastic waste. Freshwater refills are only available at Erick Basecamp, so plan accordingly.  
  • Pack your own snacks and light meals to maintain energy throughout the climb. 
  • Tipping is not mandatory but will always be appreciated. 
  • Under the regulation of Malaysia’s Ministry of Tourism and Culture, foreign tourists are required to pay a Tourism Tax (TTx) of MYR10 per room per night. Malaysians and permanent residents are exempted with valid ID upon check-in.
