Day 1 Sandakan / Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre / Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre / Sukau Rainforest Lodge / Kinabatangan River Cruise Upon arriving at Sandakan Airport, you'll be transferred to the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre. Here, you’ll watch an educational video about the orangutans and take a guided walk through the rainforest to observe their feeding at 1000hrs. You’ll also get to see young orangutans in the newly constructed enclosed nursery area. Next, visit the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre to learn about efforts to protect the world’s smallest bear species. Afterwards, embark on a 2-hour drive to the award-winning Sukau Rainforest Lodge, an eco-lodge offering modern comforts along the banks of one of Malaysia’s longest rivers, Kinabatangan River. In the afternoon, enjoy a river cruise, where you'll search for wildlife and birds using a boat equipped with both outboard and electric motors. Kinabatangan River is considered a hotbed of wildlife activity, with opportunities for visitors to spot proboscis monkeys, pygmy elephants, orangutan, hornbills, and more. Day 2 Kinabatangan River / Hornbill Boardwalk / Orangutan Talk / River Cruise Start your day early with a 0600hrs river cruise along the Kinabatangan River, heading towards Kelenanap Oxbow Lake to spot various birds and wildlife. After breakfast, take a guided tour of the lodge’s Hornbill Boardwalk with an in-house naturalist to learn more about the diverse ecosystem of Kinabatangan River. Later, participate in an Orangutan Talk before enjoying lunch. In the afternoon, embark on another river cruise to explore more of the region’s diverse wildlife. Day 3 Return to Sandakan / Rainforest Discovery Centre After breakfast, check out and return to Sandakan by either boat or land. Enjoy lunch before visiting the Rainforest Discovery Centre, where you can enjoy the view from the canopy walk and hanging bridge, and explore the botanical garden filled with various plant species. Day 4 Sandakan PSR Jetty / Lankayan Island Dive Resort Check out of your Sandakan accommodation and take a 30-minute drive to Sandakan PSR Jetty. From there, board a speedboat to Lankayan Island, enjoying the scenic 90-minute ocean ride. Check-in at Lankayan Island Dive Resort and enjoy a relaxing rest of your day. Day 6 Sandakan / Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary After breakfast, check out from Lankayan Island and take a boat back to the jetty. From there, transfer by land to Sandakan. Visit Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary, a 400-acre site where you can observe Proboscis Monkeys, Small Clawed Otters, and Silver Leafed Monkeys in their natural environment. The site was originally meant to be developed into a palm oil estate. But when the owners discovered a small population of proboscis monkeys living within the site, plans for palm oil were quickly replaced with plans for a wildlife sanctuary instead. Currently, there are an estimated 150 proboscis monkeys residing within Labuk Bay. After lunch, head to your Sandakan accommodation for the night. Day 7 Borneo Rainforest Lodge / Nature Trails / Treetop Canopy Walk / Night Safari Drive After breakfast, embark on a 4.5-hour drive to the Danum Valley Conservation Area, Sabah's largest protected lowland rainforest. Check-in at the award-winning Borneo Rainforest Lodge, offering modern comforts and eco-luxury amidst the pristine primary rainforest of Danum Valley. Enjoy lunch at the lodge, followed by a presentation in the Conference Room. Take an introductory walk through one of the many nature trails that surround the lodge, stopping at the 300m long, 26m high Canopy Walkway for an up-close view of the rainforest. After dinner, join a night safari drive in an open-top vehicle to search for nocturnal animals, weather permitting. Some nocturnal wildlife you may have the opportunity to see at Danum Valley include tarsiers, moonrats, civets, and a diverse range of frogs, vipers, and insects. Day 8 Jungle Trek / Kadazandusun Burial Site-Coffin Cliff / Jacuzzi Pool / Tubing in Danum River / Night Walk Begin your day with a morning jungle trek to Coffin Cliff, a Kadazandusun burial site, followed by a visit to the View Point for a panoramic view of the rainforest. Descend to the nearby Natural Jacuzzi Pool for a refreshing dip before returning to the lodge for lunch. In the late afternoon, you have the option to either go on another jungle trek or enjoy a fun session of tubing down Danum River. Day 9 [Flight] Lahad Datu to Kota Kinabalu / Arrival in Kota Kinabalu / Shangri-La Rasa Ria Enjoy breakfast at the lodge and the rest of the morning at your leisure. After lunch, check out and transfer to Lahad Datu Airport for your flight to Kota Kinabalu.
