Approximately 80 kilometres west of Lahad Datu, soak in the tranquil ambience of Sabah’s east coast at the Danum Valley Field Centre, a pristine rainforest reserve, for a quintessentially Bornean experience.
Right at the break of dawn, brave an arduous trek up Bukit Atur for an unforgettable sunrise; escape the midday heat at the river beaches; explore the wildlife along the many nature trails or test your luck at encountering the nocturnal residents of the area at nightfall.
The Danum Valley Field Centre is surrounded by pristine rainforest, home to over 500 species of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, a variety of towering tropical trees, lingering lianas, exotic orchids, and overhanging epiphytes.
Located on the southeast coast of Sabah, the award-winning Borneo Rainforest Lodge is nestled 2 hours out of Lahad Datu and sits alongside the Danum River. Stay in one of their 31 chalets as you are surrounded by the beauty of the 43,800-hectare Danum Valley Conservation Area.
Pick-up from Lahad Datu at 0830hrs and travel for 2 ½ hours to Danum Valley Field Centre (DVFC). Along the way, enjoy the stunning views of Borneo's 130-million-year-old tropical rainforest.
Upon arrival, head to the DVCA Reception & Information Building for registration and briefing by DVFC staff before checking in to your accommodation.
Enjoy a delicious lunch at the dining hall.
After lunch, meet with your nature guide to plan your activities at DVFC. You can relax and take a short nap before your afternoon walk around the centre. Keep on the lookout for the resident orang utan, red-leaf monkey, sambar deer, wild boar, hornbills, and other wildlife during your walk.
Return to the centre by sundown for your dinner at the dining hall.
After dinner, join the guided night walk or night drive (optional at an additional cost) to spot nocturnal wildlife (weather permitting).
Return to your accommodation for a good night's rest.

Nature & Wildlife Observation / Night Jungle Walk
Good morning! Wake up at 0600hrs for morning nature and wildlife observation with your nature guide.
Return to the centre for breakfast. After your meal, feel free to head out for a walk on the nature trail or along the suspension bridge. Wildlife spottings are common in and around the centre.
Enjoy your lunch before heading off for more jungle trekking in the afternoon. Please consult your nature guide if you wish to go on a longer trail.
Head back to the centre in the late evening for dinner. After dinner, embark on another night walk or drive to spot nocturnal wildlife (weather permitting).
Head back to your accommodation to get some well-deserved rest.

Day3
Hike To Bukit Atur / Borneo Rainforest Lodge / Nature Trails / Tree-Top Canopy Walk / Night Drive
Good morning! Your day starts at 0430hrs for the 4x4 drive to Bukit Atur for an early morning hike to see the sunrise. Alternatively, you can sleep in and take a morning walk with your nature guide at 0600hrs.
Return to the centre for a hearty breakfast at the dining hall. After your meal, feel free to take some time to rest or explore a trail near the centre.
Check out of the accommodation by 1030hrs and depart for Borneo Rainforest Lodge.
You will arrive at Borneo Rainforest Lodge by 1200hrs. Check in to your accommodation and head to the restaurant for lunch.
At 1430hrs, go to the Conference Room for a slide presentation before starting your afternoon trek through the nature trails and tree-top canopy.
Return to the lodge by 1900hrs for dinner.
After dinner, head out for a night drive in an open-top vehicle to look for nocturnal animals (subject to weather conditions).
Return to your accommodation for a well-earned sleep.
Jungle Trek / Kadazandusun Burial Site - Coffin Cliff / Jacuzzi Pool / Rafting In Danum River / Night Walk
Rise and shine! Head to the restaurant for breakfast before your morning jungle trek. You will visit the Kadazandusun burial site called Coffin Cliff before proceeding to View Point for a bird's eye view of the area and a refreshing swim at the Jacuzzi Pool.
Return to the lodge for lunch and take a short rest before continuing with your afternoon activity. You may go on another jungle trek or go river rafting on the Danum River.
Head back to the lodge by 1900hrs for dinner.
After your meal, go on a night walk to see more nocturnal animals (subject to weather conditions).

Cell phone coverage is available but limited depending on weather conditions and satellite function. Be prepared to have no coverage for some of your stay.
Danum Valley Field Centre's electricity is powered by generators. The generators will shut down from 2300hrs - 0700hrs. Battery-powered lamps are provided in each room, but you may wish to bring your own torchlight. Borneo Rainforest Lodge (BRL) has 24-hour electricity.
Effective as of 1st September 2017, the Tourism and Culture Ministry of Malaysia will be implementing a Malaysian Tourism Tax (TTX). Foreign tourists will be required to pay a flat rate of MYR 10 per room per night regardless of accommodation star level. The TTx is to be paid upon check-in. Malaysians or permanent residents residing in Malaysia are exempted from TTx and are required to present valid identification upon check-in for the exemption.

Danum Valley Field Centre is a no-fly zone. If you wish to fly a drone, you must apply for a permit at least 2 months prior to your trip.
The power outlets at the centre are all UK 3-pin sockets. For electronics and appliances that do not have UK 3-pin plugs, you may wish to bring your own power adapters.

Make sure you always have enough dry bags and think about ways of keeping your equipment dry as the rainforest can be quite unpredictable and wet items will be extremely hard to dry or air out.
Before departing from Lahad Datu, you may ask your driver to bring you to a local shop to buy "adidas kampung" (rubber trekking shoes) – the recommended shoes for trekking through Borneo tropical rainforest.
