Your base is INFAPRO, a long-running reforestation project located within the Ulu Segama Forest Reserve, just outside the Danum Valley Conservation Area. With spacious, private resthouses and 24-hour electricity, INFAPRO offers a quieter, more comfortable alternative to Danum Valley Field Centre (DVFC), while remaining significantly more affordable than upscale lodges like Borneo Rainforest Lodge.

Each day begins with early morning 4x4 safari drives into the 130-million-year-old Danum Valley rainforest, followed by guided treks through rich birding habitats. With access to both primary forest and regenerating landscapes, you’ll have high chances of spotting rare species such as the Great Argus, Helmeted Hornbill, and Rhinoceros Hornbill. After dark, night walks and drives reveal owls, civets, flying squirrels, and other nocturnal species. Thanks to a wildlife corridor linking INFAPRO and DVFC, your opportunities to observe elusive birds and mammals are further enhanced. About The Location

INFAPRO Reforestation Site
INFAPRO (INnoprise-Face PROject) is a pioneering reforestation project established in the early 1990s to restore degraded forest areas in Sabah. Located within the Ulu Segama Forest Reserve, just outside the Danum Valley Conservation Area, INFAPRO is both a conservation success story and a comfortable base for nature-based travellers. The site features spacious resthouses with 24-hour electricity, ideal for birders needing to charge gear and enjoy uninterrupted comfort. Staying here contributes directly to the regeneration of Borneo’s rainforest ecosystems, offering a more tranquil and sustainable experience away from busier lodges.

Danum Valley Field Centre (DVFC)
The Danum Valley Field Centre is a globally recognized research facility positioned on the edge of the Danum Valley Conservation Area. It plays a vital role in rainforest science and biodiversity monitoring, and has become a hub for eco-tourism and wildlife observation. Visitors can explore extensive trail networks and experience the full spectrum of Borneo’s rainforest wildlife – including rare bird species, orangutans, and flying squirrels – guided by seasoned naturalists and researchers.

Danum Valley Conservation Area (DVCA)
The Danum Valley Conservation Area is one of the richest and most pristine tropical rainforests in Southeast Asia, covering 43,800 hectares of primary lowland dipterocarp forest. This protected sanctuary is home to an astounding range of species, including endangered mammals, reptiles, and over 340 recorded bird species. Among its most iconic avian residents are the Great Argus, Helmeted Hornbill, and Rhinoceros Hornbill, making it a bucket-list destination for birdwatchers and biodiversity enthusiasts.

Ulu Segama Forest Reserve
The Ulu Segama Forest Reserve surrounds Danum Valley and forms a critical part of Sabah’s conservation corridor network. Though historically logged, large sections are now under active reforestation – INFAPRO being a leading example. This forest reserve provides essential connectivity for wildlife, enabling free movement between protected zones. It’s especially important for wide-ranging species such as hornbills and primates, and supports sustainable eco-tourism experiences that combine biodiversity access with real conservation value.

Sample Itinerary

Day 1

Lahad Datu / INFAPRO / Afternoon Safari Drive / Danum Valley Field Centre / Birdwatching & Nature Observation / INFAPRO / Night Safari Drive

(Note: The itinerary provided is a sample and is subject to changes based on weather, wildlife, and guest fitness. Your guide will make adjustments to ensure optimal experiences and safety throughout the tour.)

Arrive in Lahad Datu by 08:15 Hrs and meet your guide for a 2.5-hour overland transfer to INFAPRO, a working reforestation site and conservation base. 

Upon arrival, receive a warm welcome, safety briefing, and check into the spacious, fan-cooled rooms at INFAPRO's resthouses, a comfortable upgrade from DVFC’s more basic lodgings. 

Enjoy a hearty lunch at the dining hall and take a short rest before departing at 15:00 Hrs for your first 4x4 safari drive to Danum Valley Field Centre (DVFC). Spot wildlife en route and explore trails around DVFC, where your guide will introduce you to the birdlife and biodiversity of the area. 

After dinner at INFAPRO, embark on a night drive to observe nocturnal species like civets, slow lorises, and owls (weather permitting).

Day 2

Morning Safari Drive / Danum Valley Field Centre / Birdwatching & Nature Observation / Guided Night Walk

Wake early and set off on a 4x4 safari drive into DVFC, arriving just in time for the magical dawn chorus – an orchestra of calls from hornbills, pittas, and broadbills. 

Spend the day trekking various forest trails, including riverine paths and ridgelines, searching for Borneo’s avian treasures like the Black-and-yellow Broadbill, Bornean Spiderhunter, and Great Argus. Take regular breaks at lookout points and forest shelters for photography and observation. 

After a fulfilling day in the field, return to INFAPRO for a restful evening. 

Post-dinner, join a guided night walk in search of nocturnal wildlife such as flying lemurs and nightjars.

Day 3

Depart again in the early morning for a morning safari drive and a full day of birdwatching at DVFC, visiting different sections of the trail system to increase the diversity of potential sightings. 

Your guide will adapt the route based on bird movements, sightings from previous days, and your preferences. The day offers another chance to experience Danum Valley’s lush rainforest and rich soundscape. 

Return to INFAPRO for dinner followed by another guided night walk, offering a fresh opportunity to encounter different nocturnal wildlife.

On your last full day, continue your birdwatching journey with a morning safari drive and trail exploration at DVFC. 

The focus may be on revisiting favourite trails or targeting specific species not yet seen. The experience remains flexible to suit guest interest and environmental conditions. 

As always, the day concludes with a return to INFAPRO for dinner and a final night walk, rounding out your immersive rainforest experience.

Rise early for a pre-dawn drive to Bukit Atur viewpoint, where you’ll witness a spectacular sunrise over the mist-shrouded canopy, an unforgettable sendoff for birdwatchers and photographers alike. 

After returning to INFAPRO for a relaxed breakfast, you’ll have free time to unwind or reflect on your journey before checking out at 09:30 Hrs and your departure transfer at 10:30 Hrs.

  • The accommodation at INFAPRO offers larger and more comfortable rooms compared to Danum Valley Field Centre (DVFC). Amenities are basic and practical, suitable for eco-travellers who value space, privacy, and uninterrupted access to power.
