Located approximately 80 kilometres west of Lahad Datu on Sabah’s east coast, the field centre is accessible by road, with a journey taking at least two hours. It is home to over 500 species of mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians living in relatively untouched habitats. The hot and humid jungle teems with towering tropical trees, lingering lianas, exotic orchids, and overhanging epiphytes.

Birdwatching enthusiasts will be thrilled with the opportunity to spot the 7 hornbill species of Borneo among other rare and exotic birds. The centre is a haven for birding and bird photography, offering unparalleled opportunities to capture these magnificent creatures in their natural surroundings. 

Feed your curiosity and immerse yourself in a variety of activities for that quintessential Bornean experience. Start your day with an early morning trek to spot wildlife, take a dip in the river beach to escape the midday heat, or hike up to Bukit Atur to catch one of Borneo’s best sunrises. For the more adventurous, longer hiking trails offer deeper exploration of the jungle. Nightly walks and drives provide a chance to spot nocturnal wildlife. Sample Itinerary

Day 1

Lahad Datu / Danum Valley Field Centre / Night Drive

Please note that the itinerary below is a suggested sample. Activities may be tailored to your interests and current conditions, in consultation with your nature guide upon arrival at DVFC.

Begin your adventure with an 08:00 Hrs pick-up from your hotel or Lahad Datu Airport, followed by a scenic 2.5-hour overland journey into the heart of Borneo’s ancient wilderness, the Danum Valley Conservation Area. Along the way, observe the gradual transformation of the landscape from regenerating forests to the untouched beauty of a 130-million-year-old tropical rainforest.

Upon arrival, proceed to the DVCA Reception and Information Building for registration. After a short briefing by the DVFC staff, check into your accommodation and enjoy a hearty lunch at the dining hall.

In the afternoon, consult with your nature guide to discuss and personalise your activity plans for the days ahead. You may choose to relax or take a short nap before heading out on a mid-afternoon walk around the field centre. This introductory walk offers a chance to encounter resident wildlife such as orangutans, red leaf monkeys, sambar deer, wild boars, and hornbills.

By 19:00 Hrs, return to the centre before sunset and enjoy your dinner.

After dinner, join a 4x4 night drive to search for nocturnal wildlife (subject to weather conditions).

Day 2

Nature & Wildlife Observation / Night Jungle Walk

Rise early for a 06:00 Hrs nature and wildlife walk with your guide to experience the peaceful morning ambience of the rainforest, just as it has been for millions of years.

Return to the centre for a hearty breakfast. Afterwards, you may choose to explore a nearby trail at your own pace.

Spend the late morning relaxing before lunch. In the afternoon, head out for another guided trek. There are various trails in the area, including longer and more challenging ones. Your guide will assess your fitness level before selecting a suitable route.

Return to the centre in the late evening, just in time to watch the sky change colours as the day winds down. After dinner, join your guide on a night walk in search of nocturnal wildlife (subject to weather conditions).

Day 3

Bukit Atur / Danum Valley / Overland to Lahad Datu

Wake up as early as 04:30 Hrs for a 4x4 drive to Bukit Atur, where you may catch the breathtaking sight of the first light breaking over the valley (subject to weather conditions).

Return to the centre for a hearty breakfast. Afterwards, you may choose to relax or take a final stroll along one of the nearby trails.

Pack your belongings and check out before departing DVFC for your onward journey to Lahad Datu.

  • Cell phone coverage is available but limited depending on weather conditions and satellite function. Be prepared to have no coverage for some of your stay.
  • DVFC electricity is powered by generators. The generators will shut down from 23:00 - 07:00 hrs. Battery-powered lamps are provided in each room but you may wish to bring your own torchlight.
  • Effective as of 1st September 2017, the Tourism and Culture Ministry of Malaysia will be implementing a Malaysian Tourism Tax (TTX). Foreign tourists will be required to pay a flat rate of MYR 10 per room per night regardless of accommodation star level. The TTx is to be paid upon check-in. Malaysians or permanent residents residing in Malaysia are exempted from TTx and are required to present valid identification upon check-in for the exemption.
