Sabah experienced an offshore earthquake at midnight on 23 February 2026 that measured a magnitude of 6.8. According to the Malaysian Meteorological Department, the quake occurred at coordinates 7.0° North and 116.4° East, at a depth of 678km, approximately 49km west of Kudat. Due to its significant depth beneath the Earth’s surface, there is no tsunami threat, and no casualties or major damage have been reported.

Local authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, and daily activities, tourism operations, and transport services across the state are functioning as normal and no further warnings from Met Malaysia have been issued at this time. Popular destinations including Kota Kinabalu, Mount Kinabalu, Semporna, Sandakan, and Kudat remain unaffected.

Sabah, also known as the “Land Below the Wind,” is geographically positioned outside the Pacific Ring of Fire’s most active zones, making major natural disasters extremely rare.
