The United States is encouraging its citizens and travellers from around the world to visit Sabah, citing improvements in security and eased travel advice for the state. 

US Embassy Chargé d’Affaires to Malaysia David Gamble said the changes reflected the improved security situation. He also noted that other countries were reviewing their advisories. 

“We want to see more tourists from around the world come here because Sabah is a fantastic place to visit,” he said after launching Freedom 250 Sabah at the state library in Tanjung Aru, Kota Kinabalu, on 2 September 2026. The campaign marks the 250th anniversary of US independence.

What Has Changed in Sabah’s Travel Advisory? 

The US eased its advisory for eastern Sabah in February 2026. The current US advisory places Malaysia at Level 1, calling for normal precautions. Islands and maritime areas off Eastern Sabah, from Kudat to Tawau, remain Level 2, with increased caution advised due to kidnapping risk. 

Japan followed with its own revision four months later, lowering its advisory for coastal areas from Kudat to Tawau, including Pulau Banggi and Pulau Balambangan, from Level 2 to Level 1. 

International visitors should refer to their own government’s latest guidance when planning their itinerary.
