What is the current haze situation in Sabah?

Sabah is currently experiencing hazy conditions. Air quality can change throughout the day and may differ between districts, with some monitoring stations recently recording unhealthy Air Pollutant Index (API) levels.

Sabah authorities are monitoring the situation, which has been influenced by smoke carried towards the state from Kalimantan. For the latest reading in the area you are visiting, check Malaysia’s official APIMS page. Relevant public advisories may also be published through the Sabah State Government.

Will my Sabah tour be affected by the haze?

Haze does not automatically mean that tours will be cancelled. Our Sales and Operations teams are monitoring official updates and conditions at each destination. Decisions will take into account the local air quality, visibility, the nature of the activity and advice from the authorities.

If any changes or cancellations become necessary, we will contact affected guests using the details provided in their booking. Please make sure your contact information is correct and accessible while travelling.

Even when a tour proceeds, haze may reduce visibility. Distant mountain views, islands, skylines and sunsets may appear less clear than usual. Conditions can improve or worsen within a short period, so scenic visibility cannot be guaranteed.

How can I prepare for travelling during the haze?

These simple precautions can help reduce exposure:

Check the local API reading before spending extended periods outdoors.
Reduce strenuous outdoor activity when air quality is poor, and take breaks indoors where possible.
Bring a suitable, well-fitting face mask. Malaysia’s Ministry of Health advises that a properly worn respirator such as an N95 provides better protection from fine haze particles than a surgical mask.
Drink plenty of water, even if you do not feel thirsty.
Keep vehicle windows closed and use the air-conditioning recirculation setting where practical.
Wash your hands and face after outdoor activities.
Keep prescribed medication, including inhalers, readily available.

Children, older adults, pregnant travellers and people with asthma or other heart and lung conditions may be more sensitive to poor air quality. The Ministry of Health notes that N95 respirators may not be suitable for children, pregnant people or some individuals with heart or lung conditions. Seek medical advice if you are unsure whether a respirator is suitable for you.
