Sample itinerary

Day 1 - Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre / Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre / Sim Sim Jetty / Abai Jungle Lodge / Kinabatangan River Cruise

08:00 Hrs: Pick-up from Sandakan Airport or your hotel and depart for the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre.

09:30 Hrs – 09:50 Hrs: Visit the outdoor nursery and witness the orangutan feeding session.

10:30 Hrs: Continue to the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre, located nearby, to learn about conservation efforts and observe sun bears in their natural forest environment.

11:15 Hrs: Late morning, depart Sepilok and transfer to Sim Sim Jetty. Board the scheduled boat at 12:00 Hrs and travel upriver to Abai Jungle Lodge.

13:00 Hrs: Arrive at Abai Jungle Lodge and enjoy lunch at the lodge restaurant. After checking in, take time to rest and enjoy the riverside surroundings.

16:30 Hrs: In the late afternoon, head out on a river cruise along the Kinabatangan River until night falls and continue night cruise to witness nocturnal wildlife and fireflies.

19:30 Hrs: Dinner is served at Jetty facing Kinabatangan River. After dinner, proceed for a guided night walk along the lodge’s nature boardwalk (600m to 1000m).

Day 2 - Morning River Cruise / Sukau / Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge / Evening River Cruise

06:30 Hrs: Early morning river cruise to Pitas Oxbow Lake, a prime location for birdwatching and wildlife spotting.

08:00 Hrs: Return to the lodge for breakfast at the Abai Jungle Platform.

10:00 Hrs: Cruise upriver towards Sukau, enjoying scenic views and opportunities for wildlife sightings along the way.

12:00 Hrs: Arrive at Sukau and check-in to Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge.

12:30 Hrs: Lunch is served at the lodge.

14:30 Hrs – 16:00 Hrs: Free time at leisure to relax or enjoy the lodge facilities, including the swimming pool.

16:30 Hrs: In the afternoon, embark on a river cruise to Menanggul River, known for its rich biodiversity and wildlife encounters.

19:30 Hrs: Dinner is served at Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge.

Day 3 - Morning River Cruise / Sukau Village / Evening River Cruise

06:30 Hrs: Early morning river cruise to the oxbow lake for further wildlife observation.

09:00 Hrs: Return to the lodge for breakfast at the Kinabatangan River View Jetty.

12:30 Hrs: Lunch at a Sukau villager’s house or at the lodge, offering a glimpse into local community life.

16:30 Hrs: In the late afternoon, head out for another river cruise along the Kinabatangan River, exploring different areas for wildlife sightings.

19:30 Hrs: Dinner is served at Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge.

Day 4 - Departure

07:30 Hrs: After breakfast, depart Sukau by boat and travel downriver towards Sandakan.

  • Please ensure you are holding an air ticket to Sandakan. Flights are not included in this package. 
  • This is a nature-based experience, and guests should expect insects, forest sounds, and basic lodge facilities, especially in Kinabatangan. 
  • Accommodation at Abai Jungle Lodge is simple and designed for nature immersion rather than luxury. 
  • Flights to Sandakan should be scheduled to arrive before 08:00 Hrs on Day 1. 
  • Flights departing Sandakan should be scheduled for after 14:00 Hrs on Day 4. 
  • Travel insurance is not included and is strongly recommended. 
  • Effective as of 1st September 2017, the Tourism and Culture Ministry of Malaysia has implemented a Malaysian Tourism Tax (TTx). Foreign tourists are required to pay a flat rate of MYR 10 per room per night regardless of accommodation star level. The TTx is to be paid upon check-in.
