Sample itinerary

Day 1 - Arrival / Selingan Island Turtle Experience

09:00-09:30 Hrs: Pick up from Hotel or Resort and proceed to Jetty for boat depart to Selingan Island.

10:15 Hrs: Depart from the jetty by boat to Selingan Island, followed by check-in to your chalet with a private attached bathroom for your comfort.

12:30 Hrs: Lunch is served at the Selingan Cafeteria. Enjoy free time to relax or explore the island until dinner at 19:30 Hrs.

After dinner, remain at the cafeteria and await the ranger's call. Once notified, proceed to the beach to observe turtle nesting. You will also witness the transfer of eggs to the hatchery, followed by the release of baby turtles into the sea.

Overnight at Selingan Island.

Day 2 - Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre / Sun Bear Conservation Centre / Sim Sim Jetty / Abai Jungle Lodge / Kinabatangan River Cruise

07:00 Hrs: Check out from your accommodation on Selingan Island and begin your return journey to Sandakan by boat.

08:00 Hrs: After arriving in Sandakan proceed to Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre.

09:30-09:50 Hrs: Visit the outdoor nursery to see young Orangutans up close in a semi-wild environment.

10:00 Hrs: Watch the Orangutan feeding session, one of the key highlights at Sepilok.

10:30 Hrs: Proceed to the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre to learn about the protection and rehabilitation of Sun Bears and obeserve them in their natural forest environment.

11:15 Hrs: Leave Sepilok and transfer to Sim Sim Jetty. Board the scheduled boat at 12:00 Hrs to Abai Jungle Lodge.

13:15 Hrs: Arrive at Abai Jungle Lodge. Enjoy lunch, check in, and unwind while taking in the peaceful riverside surroundings.

16:30 Hrs: Set off on a river cruise along the Kinabatangan River, continuing into the evening to look out for wildlife and glowing fireflies.

19:30 Hrs: Dinner is served at the Jetty facing the river. After dinner, take part in a guided night walk along the lodge’s nature boardwalk (600m to 1000m).

Day 3 - Morning River Cruise / Evening River Cruise / Abai Village

06:30 Hrs: Set out on an early morning river cruise to Pitas Oxbow Lake, a great spot for birdwatching and wildlife sightings.

08:00 Hrs: Return to the lodge for breakfast at the Abai Jungle Platform, surrounded by peaceful rainforest view.

11:30 Hrs: Visit Abai Village to learn about the local way of life. Enjoy a simple lunch with the villagers as part of a community-based experience.

16:30 Hrs: Head out for another afternoon river cruise, keeping an eye out for wildlife along the riverbanks.

19:30 Hrs: Dinner at Abai Jungle Lodge, with a quiet and relaxed atmosphere by the river.

Day 4 - Departure

08:00 Hrs: Enjoy a relaxing breakfast at the lodge.

09:00 Hrs: Check out from your accommodation and proceed with your transfer back to Sandakan.

10:30 Hrs: Enjoy an early lunch before transferring to Sandakan Airport for your onward flight (recommended after 14:00 Hrs).

THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW

  • Please ensure you are holding an air ticket to Sandakan. Flights are not included in this package. 
  • This is a nature-based experience, and guests should expect insects, forest sounds, and basic lodge facilities, especially in Kinabatangan. 
  • Accommodation at Abai Jungle Lodge is simple and designed for nature immersion rather than luxury. 
  • Flights to Sandakan should be scheduled to arrive before 09:00 Hrs on Day 1. 
  • Flights departing Sandakan should be scheduled for after 14:00 Hrs on Day 4. 
  • Travel insurance is not included and is strongly recommended. 
  • Effective as of 1st September 2017, the Tourism and Culture Ministry of Malaysia has implemented a Malaysian Tourism Tax (TTx). Foreign tourists are required to pay a flat rate of MYR 10 per room per night regardless of accommodation star level. The TTx is to be paid upon check-in. Malaysians or permanent residents residing in Malaysia are exempted from TTx and are required to present a valid identification upon check-in for the exemption.
