What in the world is MMA?
In a nutshell, Mixed Martial Arts is a combat-sport composed of both traditional and modern fighting techniques with influences stretching from Karate, Boxing, Kickboxing, Wrestling, Muay Thai and even Brazilian Ju Jitsu. By taking elements from individual Martial Arts and fusing them into holistic knowledge, you’ve got a sport that focuses on technique instead of raw brute, you’ve got a dynamic approach towards fitness, both mind and body. And in self-defense, you’ll know how to kick-it like Bruce Lee.
Who is it for?
Anyone who’s keen on picking up new skills, eager to gain physical fitness, want a healthy lifestyle, interested in self-defense or simply want something different from the regular gym routines. Studies has also shown that MMA training is a good alternative stress-reliever. Children ages 8 above that find an interest in MMA can also be introduced to the sport.
Do I need to go to a regular gym, get in shape first, and then join MMA after?
Not at all! MMA training is in itself a way to get in shape and stay fit. It is an intense fat-burning work-out, but other than weight-loss benefits, an one-hour class usually includes calisthenics, strength training, cardiovascular workouts and skills practice. Discipline and self-control is a huge part of that MMA too. Its an all-round holistic approach towards feeling good and looking good.
Is it a violent sport?
Like everything else, there will be misconceptions. There are generally some mistaken beliefs regarding MMA, it being violent and what not.
MMA is about physical ability, learned skill, self-control, discipline and choices. Get educated and do some research if you are curious on this aspect, there will always be different point of views. Mingle with MMA trainers and you will soon find out that those who are knowledgeable in MMA are more inclined to discuss technical aspects of the sport, applied physiology, nutrition etc.
Is it a man only sport?
For the record, that is a myth. MMA is vastly popular among both man and woman. More and more woman are getting involved. In fact, Ann Osman, Malaysia's 1st Female Pro-MMA Fighter fighting in ONE Fighting Championship is making history as we speak in the MMA arena.
