Sample itinerary

Day 1 - KOPEL / Tungog Rainforest Eco Camp / Kinabatangan River Cruise / Night Walk

At 12:00 Hrs, arrive at KOPEL Base and receive a warm welcome with an orientation. Enjoy a simple local-style lunch upon arrival before beginning your eco-adventure.

At 14:00 Hrs, board a boat and cruise along the Kinabatangan River towards Tungog Rainforest Eco Camp (TREC). Admire the lush riverside scenery and keep an eye out for proboscis monkeys, hornbills, and crocodiles along the way. Upon arrival, settle into your rustic accommodation and join a camp orientation before setting out on your first guided jungle trek. Your naturalist guide will introduce you to the fascinating flora and fauna of the rainforest.

At 17:00 Hrs, embark on a wildlife river cruise during golden hour—an ideal time to spot macaques, hornbills, and perhaps even orangutans or pygmy elephants.

Return to camp at 18:30 Hrs and enjoy a freshly prepared dinner at 19:00 Hrs.

At 20:00 Hrs, venture into the forest on a night walk, discovering nocturnal creatures such as owls, slow lorises, and an array of fascinating insects.

Return to your accommodation for a good night's rest.

Day 2 - Birdwatching / Jungle Trekking / Tree Planting / Kinabatangan River Cruise

Awaken to the sounds of the forest and depart at 06:00 Hrs for early morning birdwatching. Spot kingfishers, hornbills, broadbills, and other colourful species in the soft morning light.

Return for breakfast at 07:30 Hrs before heading deeper into the rainforest at 09:00 Hrs on a guided trek. Learn jungle survival skills, discover medicinal plants, and track animal signs with your guide.

Enjoy some free time at 11:00 Hrs to relax by the river or soak in the tranquillity of the forest. Lunch is served at 12:00 Hrs.

In the afternoon at 13:00 Hrs, you may continue trekking or enjoy leisure time at camp.

At 16:00 Hrs, join a meaningful forest conservation program by planting native tree saplings to help restore the Kinabatangan floodplain.

Set off at 17:00 Hrs for another magical wildlife river cruise at sunset. Watch the river come alive with macaques, hornbills, eagles, and more.

Return to TREC at 18:00 Hrs for a hearty dinner at 19:30 Hrs. At 20:00 Hrs, step into the forest once again for a night walk to uncover the hidden nocturnal life of the jungle.

Head back to your accommodation for the night.

Day 3 - Kinabatangan River Cruise / Ancient Visit / Nursery / Jungle Trekking / Jungle Walk

Begin the day at 06:00 Hrs with a serene sunrise river safari, the best time to witness wildlife awakening along the misty Kinabatangan River.

After breakfast at 07:30 Hrs, depart at 09:00 Hrs for a visit to Batu Tulug, an archaeological site featuring ancient log coffins that reveal the spiritual traditions of early river communities.

At 11:00 Hrs, stop by a local tree nursery to learn about reforestation efforts before enjoying lunch at 12:00 Hrs.

The afternoon at 13:00 Hrs is free for either jungle trekking or relaxation at camp.

Dinner is served at 19:00 Hrs, followed by a guided night walk at 20:00 Hrs to discover the rainforest’s nocturnal wonders before returning to your room.

Day 4 - Kinabatangan River Cruise / Departure

Rise early for a final 06:00 Hrs river cruise, capturing last glimpses of Kinabatangan’s wildlife at dawn.

Return for breakfast at 07:30 Hrs before checking out at 09:00 Hrs. Transfer by boat back to KOPEL and bid farewell to the rainforest, carrying with you unforgettable memories of your Kinabatangan adventure.

  • Tungog Rainforest Eco Camp is an off-grid facility with minimal electricity and no mobile signal. Guests are advised to embrace the disconnect. 
  • The camp’s accommodation is basic but comfortable, with raised platform tents or huts, mosquito nets, and shared bathroom facilities. 
  • Solar power & rainwater systems support the camp.
  • Weather is unpredictable—pack for both rain and sun.
  • Activities may be rearranged due to weather or river conditions. 
  • Respect wildlife—quiet observation is key.
  • Moderate fitness required; not suitable for wheelchair users.
  • Supplies like rubber boots, torchlights, and batteries available in the village.
  • Tea, coffee, and water refills available 24/7 at camp.
  • Sunset river cruises run daily from 1630–1800 hrs, shared to minimise fuel use.
  • Child discount: 5–12 years = 50% off when sharing with a parent.
  • Solo travelers: RM350 single supplement for private hut.
  • Effective as of 1st September 2017, the Tourism and Culture Ministry of Malaysia implemented a Malaysian Tourism Tax (TTx). Foreign tourists are now required to pay a flat rate of MYR 10 per room per night regardless of accommodation star level. The TTx is to be paid upon check-in.
