TOUR OVERVIEW

Located in the Kawag Forest, the Kawag Nature Lodge (previously known as Kawag Danum Rainforest Lodge) sits on a 200-million-year-old crystalline basement and hides within its embrace several wonderful and unique treasures. The forest the lodge is situated in is also home to a variety of plant species that are endemic to Sabah and Borneo, with many of them classified as having high conservation value. Staying at the lodge will provide guests the opportunity to do some wildlife spotting, birdwatching, and river explorations, to name a few. With so much wildlife, guests can enjoy the sounds of nature right from their own backyard, whether it be the call of a male gibbon or just the call of birds signalling a good morning.

The Kawag Nature Lodge has in total 20 units, 10 units of air-conditioning lodges and 10 units of ceiling fans. The lodge also has a dining hall, an observation tower, and even a platform those who want a 360 view of Kawag River's surroudings. Guests won’t have to worry about modern amenities such as hot and cold showers, bath towels, and toiletries as they will be provided for. Electricity runs 24 hours.

Sample Itinerary

Day 1

Lahad Datu / Kawag Nature Lodge / Trek to Riverine Trail / Night Drive

  • Make your way from Lahad Datu to Kawag Nature Lodge (previously known as Kawag Danum Rainforest Lodge) at 10:30 hrs.
  • Upon arrival at Kawag Nature Lodge, head over to the main building via 200m boardwalk. Enjoy the welcome drinks on offer. Upon registration, Front Office Personnel will brief you on the facilities of the lodge. Once all that is out of the way, it’s time to check-in to your rooms and get comfy! 
  • Enjoy a delicious lunch at the Dining Hall and embark on a guided trekking experience to Riverine Trail 1, passing through streams and verdant jungles. You will even get the chance to do some wildlife spotting of endemic birds, elephants, macaques and more! 
  • Make the trek back to the lodge and indulge in a hearty dinner. All that hiking is sure to work up an appetite! 
  • A night drive after dinner takes you in search of nocturnal wildlife, though this is dependent on the weather. 
  • An overnight stay at the lodge will see you resting well to tackle the next day. Good night!

Day 2

Observation Tower / Trek to Ali Baba Waterfall / Kawag River

  • It’s time to rise with the sun! Start your day off with a morning walk to the Observation Tower to do some birdwatching. Enjoy the morning with the sound of birds chirping in the air, or you can choose to go on a walk along the Kawag Road. 
  • After a hearty breakfast at the lodge, head out on a guided trek to Waterfall Trail 4, making a round trip into the forest and passing through a limestone cave. Gear yourself up to take a dip in the Ali Baba Waterfall. If luck is on your side, you might get to spot some unique Bornean wildlife such as bearded pigs, elephants, and even birds. 
  • After tireless hours of hiking, make your way back to the main lodge to freshen up and energise yourself with lunch. 
  • After lunch, proceed to a guided walk along the Kawag River. If the weather is nice and sunny, Water Tubing may even be possible though swimming will be at your own risk. 
  • Head back to the lodge to enjoy a nice dinner before a free and easy session for the rest of the night.

Day 3

Morning Walk / Trekking / Observation Tower

  • It’s an early morning yet again, and a guided walk to View Point Trail 2 awaits us. Get ready to marvel at an incredible, panoramic view of the forest. 
  • Trekking back to the lodge, enjoy an energising breakfast before going on a guided walk once again to the Boat House to explore the Kawag River. Prepare yourself to get wet! If the river is clear, swimming or water tubing could be on the list of activities you could do. 
  • An energising lunch is ready upon your arrival at the lodge. 
  • After lunch, you can opt to go on a guided walk to a nearby trail or enjoy your own time. 
  • As evening approaches, it’s time to head out on a walk to the Observation Tower, where you can enjoy the sunset with the sound of birds singing in the background. 
  • After dinner, enjoy the rest of the night on your own time before going off to bed for a good night’s rest.

Day 4

Trekking / Lahad Datu

  • Wake up and have yourself a nice, early morning breakfast. You can choose to go trekking or rest up from all the trekking you’ve done in the past 3 days. Phew! 
  • Enjoy a nice lunch before checking out from the lodge. It is time to bid farewell to the Kawag Nature Lodge! 
  • Depart for Lahad Datu town and return to your respective hotels or head straight to the airport for your flight.

  • Effective as of 1st September 2017, the Tourism and Culture Ministry of Malaysia will be implementing a Malaysian Tourism Tax (TTX). Foreign tourists will be required to pay a flat rate of MYR 10 per room per night regardless of accommodation star level.The TTx is to be paid upon check-in.
