Sample itinerary

Day 1 - Lahad Datu / Silam Coast Conservation Area / Blue Rings Reef / Pulau Tabun Birdwatching / Pulau Baik Japanese Shipwreck / Tumunong Hallu Beach / Borneo Rainforest Lodge

08:30 Hrs: Begin your journey with a warm welcome and pick-up from Lahad Datu Airport or your hotel. After a quick registration and briefing at the tour office, you’ll be ready to set off on your coastal-to-rainforest adventure.

09:00 Hrs: Fuel up with a hearty local breakfast at a lively Lahad Datu restaurant, where the bustling morning scene gives you a taste of daily life in Sabah.

10:20 Hrs: Travel 40 minutes to the Silam Coast Conservation Area (SCCA), a marine sanctuary managed by Sabah Parks. Climb the 30-metre Menara Kayangan, or “Tower of Heaven,” for panoramic views over the emerald coastline and the Sulu Sea.

11:00 Hrs: Continue to Tumunong Hallu Jetty and board a boat bound for Blue Rings Reef, where clear waters reveal thriving coral gardens and an abundance of marine life. Slip into the water with mask and fins to snorkel among schools of colourful reef fish and, if lucky, turtles gliding gracefully by.

12:00 Hrs: Set sail for Pulau Tabun, a small uninhabited island that serves as a nesting site for the rare Philippine Megapode, locally known as the Tambun bird.

12:30 Hrs: Journey on to Pulau Baik, home to the Japanese shipwreck Maiden Oasis. Over time, the wreck has become an artificial reef, now alive with corals and marine species that make it a fascinating snorkelling spot.

13:00 Hrs: Recharge with lunch at Payang Beach Restaurant, where you’ll be treated to Sabah’s flavours, from freshly caught seafood to local favourites infused with sour, sweet, and spicy notes.

14:30 Hrs: Spend a relaxed afternoon at Tumunong Hallu Beach, a pristine coastal hideaway where golden sands and turquoise waters invite you to unwind. Enjoy hi-tea by the shore, with shower and changing facilities available before you leave.

16:00 Hrs: Transfer inland for a 2.5-hour drive to Borneo Rainforest Lodge (BRL) in the heart of Danum Valley.

19:00 Hrs: Dinner at the lodge upon arrival, followed by check-in to your eco-luxury accommodation.

20:30 Hrs: Venture out on a guided night drive in an open-top vehicle. Keep watch for nocturnal creatures such as civets, flying squirrels, and perhaps even a leopard cat. (Weather permitting.)

Continue to the View Point for breathtaking panoramas across the Danum Valley. Descend to the natural Jacuzzi Pool, where cool, clear waters provide a refreshing reward after the trek.

12:30 Hrs: Lunch at the lodge.

15:00 Hrs: Choose between another guided trek to uncover more of the valley’s flora and fauna or opt for a gentler adventure: tubing down the Danum River, drifting peacefully through the rainforest.

19:00 Hrs: Dinner at the lodge.

20:30 Hrs: After dinner, take a guided night walk on the lodge’s forest trails. With the beam of your flashlight, discover insects, frogs, and possibly a slow loris or tarantula hiding in the foliage.
