OVERVIEW OF THE LOCATION

Libaran Island :
Libaran Turtle island is a peaceful getaway just 45 minutes boat ride off the coast of Sandakan’s Yatch Club. The island is also a turtle hatchery and conservation Centre, so if you have always dreamt of witnessing the precious life cycle of a sea turtle—from the laying of eggs to releasing baby hatchlings by the sea, this is the place to be!

Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre:
Twenty five minutes west of Sandakan sits The Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, a sanctuary for our endangered friends spanning an area of 10,610 acres. It is a rehabilitation project dedicated to orphaned Orangutans that were rescued from plantations, illegal hunting, or illegally kept as pets.  The boardwalk that leads to the viewing gallery and feeding platform allows you to witness the orangutans being fed milk and bananas. Feeding happens twice a day at 10am and 3pm by rangers.

OVERVIEW OF TOUR

Witness the remarkable workings of turtle conservation on Libaran Island and swing by Sepilok Orangutan Centre to greet the fuzzy orangutans!  This guided tour allows you to fully immerse yourself in the raw side of Nature - glamping under the stars on an island, boardwalks through the rainforest, and possible sightings of wildlife and creatures on all fronts.

Day 1

DAY 1 - SANDAKAN / LIBARAN ISLAND / LIBARAN VILLAGE / TURTLE HATCHERY / GLAMPING EXPERIENCE

Upon arrival in Sandakan, you will be greeted by our friendly faces at the airport and get whisked right away to the tropical island!

Depart from Sandakan Yatch Club for a breezy 45 minutes boat ride to Libaran Island. Upon alighting on the sandy shores, check in to your tents and get comfortable.   The tents are spacious and well equipped with proper beds, carpeted tent floors, and a bedside table for a luxurious glamping experience!

After a sumptuous lunch, proceed on a visit to Libaran Village to experience the island-life.  This little fishing village sits on the opposite end of the 650 acres island, and you can get there by boat or trekking through the island.   As you stroll through the village, you are granted a glimpse into the rhythm of the day-to-day life of the locals, governed by fishing and building boats.

After some refreshing coconut quenchers fresh off the tree, you will depart back to the Libaran Turtle Hatchery.  Here is where you will discover the Island’s long-running turtle conservation program.  The conservation ranger will share about the nesting patterns of the Green-backed turtles and Hawksbill turtles which visit the Libaran Island, and explain about the conservation efforts.  On a good day, as the sun sets, you will be able to release turtle hatchlings by the sea and witness as they make their first ever instinctual dash towards home!

As darkness falls upon Libaran Island, the stars illuminate the sky and the sound of waves lapping onto the shore creates a wonderful ambience for a delicious local dinner by the sea.

After dinner, watch an informative video about the Turtles and the ongoing Conservation program.  In the dark of night, the ranger will scout the shores for any mother turtles which may be laying eggs.  If you are fortunate, you will get to experience this National Geographic moment!  However, do be aware that sightings can never be guaranteed when it comes to wildlife.

Turn in for the night and enjoy your Glamping experience!

Day 2

DAY 2 - LIBARAN ISLAND / SEPILOK ORANGUTAN REHABILITATION CENTRE / BORNEAN SUNBEAR CONSERVATION CENTRE / LUNCH / CHECK IN TO NATURE LODGE SEPILOK

Wake up, pack up and onwards you go to your next adventure.

A two and a half hour journey ushers you into the Kabili-Sepilok Forest Reserve where rehabilitating Orang Utans roam free in a natural habitat.  A short video screening at the Nature Education Centre will enlighten you on the rehabilitation efforts of the reserve.

Proceed to the boardwalk amidst a lush lowland rainforest leading you to a viewing point of the feeding platform. It will be an easy 10 minutes track, and well worth it as soon as you see the Orang Utans (Pongo Pygmaeus) swing from branch to branch for some morning grub during feeding time at 10 AM.  Once again, keep in mind that sightings are not guaranteed!

You can also visit the orangutan nursery and watch from behind full length glass windows as baby orangutans play in the man-made playground.  Keep your eyes peeled as you may also catch a glimpse of both the long tailed and pig tailed Macaques during your boardwalk.  Return to the reception center to view the displays and exhibits at the Information Centre.

Right beside the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre resides the Bornean Sunbear Conservation Centre, a rescue and rehabilitation ground for the endangered Malayan sun bears.  Observe the smallest bears in the world as they limber around or snooze in the branches of trees!

Transfer in a 3 minute drive to Nature Lodge Sepilok for Lunch and check in thereafter.

As evening creeps in, venture out on a guided tour into the Sepilok Forest Trails in search of nocturnal animals and insects.

Dinner and Overnight in Nature Lodge Sepilok.
