TOUR OVERVIEW

The Kawag Nature Lodge (previously known as Kawag Danum Rainforest Lodge) is situated in the Kawag Forest, home to a diversity of plant and animal species where many are endemic to Sabah and the island of Borneo. A stay at the lodge will see guests taking part in several activities, such as wildlife sightings and birdwatching, to name only a few.

The Kawag Nature Lodge boasts 20 units air-conditioning and ceiling fans lodges for guests’ comfort. Guests can enjoy the facilities on hand such as the dining hall, observation tower, and a platform for those looking to explore the Kawag River. The lodges are also equipped with modern amenities such as hot and cold showers, bath towels, and toiletries. Electricity runs 24 hours.

Sample itinerary

Day 1 - Lahad Datu / Kawag Nature Lodge / Trek to Riverine Trail / Night Drive

  • Make sure to recharge for the day with a good breakfast as you make your way from Lahad Datu to Kawag Nature Lodge (previously known as Kawag Danum Rainforest Lodge) at 10:30 hrs. 
  • Once you’ve arrived at the lodge, walk to the main building via a 200m boardwalk. Refresh yourself with a welcome drink. Upon registration, Front Office Personnel will give a short briefing on the facilities. Once that’s all done, it’s time to check-in to your rooms! 
  • Pamper yourself with a good lunch and we are ready to embark on a guided trek to Riverine Trail, passing through streams and jungles. Also, get the opportunity to spot some wildlife such as birds, macaques, and elephants. 
  • Make your way back to the lodge to indulge in a delicious and filling dinner. 
  • After dinner, embark on a night drive to take you deep into the jungles in search of nocturnal wildlife, though this depends on the weather. 
  • A long day awaits you the next day so it’s time to hit the sack! Good night!

Day 2 - Observation Tower / Trek to Ali Baba Waterfall / Kawag River

  • Rise and shine! It’s time to go on a morning walk at 06:00 hrs to the Observation Tower to do some birdwatching, with the sound of early birds chirping to greet us a good morning. If you prefer, you can choose to go on a morning along the Kawag Road.
  • Breakfast awaits you at the lodge so you can reenergise for your next activity. 
  • A guided trek to Waterfall Trail takes you through the forest and a limestone cave. Remember to get your swimming gear ready if you’re planning to take a dip in Ali Baba Waterfall! Wildlife sightings of bearded pigs, elephants, and birds are also possible, so keep your eyes open! 
  • Time to head back to the lodge to freshen up after a long and tiring trek, where lunch awaits.
  • Once you’ve rested well, embark on a guided walk along the Kawag River. If weather permits, water tubing is also a fun activity you can do though swimming will be at your own risk. 
  • Arrive back at the main lodge. You must be tired after a long day of activities so indulge yourself in a hearty dinner. Enjoy the rest of the day at your own time before having a good night’s sleep.

Day 3 - Morning Walk / Trekking / Lahad Datu

  • It’s an early morning for you today as you will be up and ready by 05:00 hrs to go on a guided walk up to the highest View Point Trail. Marvel from the top at the incredible panoramic view of the surrounding forests. 
  • Make your way back to the lodge where a hearty breakfast is waiting for you. Choose to go trekking again or enjoy your down time as you wish. Lunch is provided. Relax and enjoy your remaining time at Kawag Danum and take in the fresh air from the virgin jungle of Danum. 
  • It’s time to say goodbye to Kawag, though we’re sure the memories you make will stay with you for a long time. Depart for Lahad Datu Airport to catch your flight or be dropped off at your respective hotels in Lahad Datu town. Until we meet again!

THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW

  • Please ensure you are holding air ticket to Lahad Datu.
  • Cell phone coverage is available. However, it can sometimes be disrupted due to rain downpour and satellite malfunction.
  • Effective as of 1st September 2017, the Tourism and Culture Ministry of Malaysia will be implementing a Malaysian Tourism Tax (TTX). Foreign tourists will be required to pay a flat rate of MYR 10 per room per night regardless of accommodation star level.The TTx is to be paid upon check-in. Malaysians or permanent residents residing in Malaysia are exempted from TTx and is required to present a valid identification upon check-in for the exemption.
