Step into the rainforest jungle of Danum Valley Field Centre, for the ultimate Borneo Experience!

If you are a keen naturalist or adventure-seeker and are content with the bare necessities of clean and comfortable facilities, Danum Valley Field Centre is for you!

Approximately 80 metres west from Lahad Datu on Sabah’s east coast, the field centre is accessible by road and the journey takes at least two hours. It is the habitual grounds to over 500 species of mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians living relatively untouched. The hot and humid jungle deems with a variety of towering tropical trees, lingering lianas, exotic orchids, and overhanging epiphytes.

Take this opportunity to feed your curiosity and immerse yourself in a variety of activities for that quintessential Bornean experience! Start the day observing early-morning wildlife as you climb up a tree-hide, take a dip into the river to escape the midday heat or trek your way up to Bukit Atur to catch one of Borneo’s best sunrises! For the adventurous, you may opt for the longer hiking trails. And for the night owls, nightly walks may suit your fancy for a chance to spot some nocturnal wildlife. For something a little bit more on the leisure side, recharge and unwind in a stretcher hammock by the base of a waterfall!

Sample itinerary

Day 1 - LAHAD DATU / DANUM VALLEY FIELD CENTRE

  • Depart from Lahad Datu Hotels / Airport by 0830hrs and proceed 2 ½ hours overland journey to Danum Valley Conservation Area. Enjoy the changing landscapes of the regenerating forests to virgin rainforests of 130-million year old Borneo’s tropical rainforest!
  • Upon arrival, register at DVCA Reception & Information Building and check-in after briefing by DVFC staff. Enjoy your lunch provided at the Dining Hall.
  • After lunch, have a chat with your nature guide to plan your days at DVFC. Relax or take your power nap before going on a mid-afternoon walk around the centre as an introduction to the tropical rainforest. The area surrounding the center is teeming with wildlife and it is not uncommon for you to spot resident orang utan, red leaf monkey, sambar deer, wild boar, hornbills, and other species.
  • 1900hrs: Return to centre before sundown and enjoy your dinner.
  • After dinner, venture into the forest on a guided night walk to spot nocturnal wildlife.

Day 2 - NATURE & WILDLIFE OBSERVATION / NIGHT JUNGLE WALK

  • Wake up early for morning nature and wildlife observation with your nature guide at 0600hrs to experience the pristine ambience of the rainforest as it has been for millions of years.
  • Return to center for your hearty breakfast and afterwards, embark on a trail in the area if you wish.
  • Spend late morning unwinding before lunch. After lunch, head off for another trek – there are various trails available nearby the centre or embark on a longer trail if you wish; our nature guide will have to determine your fitness level before engaging you on a long hike.
  • Return to center in late evening, just in time to watch the sky changes color as the daylight fades. After dinner, embark on another night walk with your nature guide in search for nocturnal wildlife(if weather permits).

Day 3 - HIKE TO BUKIT ATUR / DANUM VALLEY / LAHAD DATU

  • Wake up as early as 0430hrs for 4x4 drive to Bukit Atur and be among the first to greet the first ray of the sun as it touches the valley (optional at a fee) or rise at 0600hrs for another morning walk with your nature guide.
  • Return to center for your hearty breakfast and afterwards, rest or embark on a trail nearby the centre.
  • Pack your belongings for check out time at 1030hrs, depart DVFC for your onwards travel to Lahad Datu.

  • DVFC electricity is powered by Generators. The generators will cease at 00:00 – 07:00 hours. You may need to prepare a torchlight.
  • Effective as of 1st September 2017, the Tourism and Culture Ministry of Malaysia will be implementing a Malaysian Tourism Tax (TTX). Foreign tourists will be required to pay a flat rate of MYR 10 per room per night regardless of accommodation star level.The TTx is to be paid upon check-in. Malaysians or permanent residents residing in Malaysia are exempted from TTx and is required to present a valid identification upon check-in for the exemption.
