Sample itinerary

Day 1 - Arrival / Transfer to TREC / Sunset River Safari / Night Walk 

10:00 Hrs – Pick-up from Sandakan Airport or your hotel in Sandakan city for your onward journey to KOPEL base in Kinabatangan.

12:00 Hrs – Registration and introduction at KOPEL base; lunch is provided upon arrival. 

14:00 Hrs – Boat transfer to Tungog Rainforest Eco Camp (TREC), gliding along the scenic Kinabatangan River. 

14:30 Hrs – Camp check-in, welcome briefing, followed by a jungle trek or camp orientation. 

17:00 Hrs – Embark on a sunset wildlife river cruise, where sightings may include proboscis monkeys, hornbills, macaques, and possibly pygmy elephants. 

18:30 Hrs – Return to camp and freshen up. 

19:00 Hrs – Enjoy a hearty dinner surrounded by jungle symphonies. 

20:00 Hrs – Head out on a night jungle walk with experienced guides to discover nocturnal species and rainforest sounds.

Day 2 - Sunrise River Cruise / Breakfast / Departure

06:00 Hrs – Rise early for a sunrise river cruise, catching the rainforest as it awakens – a golden hour for birds and riverbank wildlife. 

07:30 Hrs – Breakfast served back at camp. 

09:00 Hrs – Check-out and boat transfer back to KOPEL base for your return journey to Sandakan Airport or your accommodation in Sandakan City.

  • Tungog Rainforest Eco Camp is an off-grid facility with minimal electricity and no mobile signal. Guests are advised to embrace the disconnect. 
  • The camp’s accommodation is basic but comfortable, with raised platform tents or huts, mosquito nets, and shared bathroom facilities. 
  • Wildlife sightings are based on nature’s rhythms and cannot be guaranteed. 
  • Activities may be rearranged due to weather or river conditions. 
  • Effective as of 1st September 2017, the Tourism and Culture Ministry of Malaysia implemented a Malaysian Tourism Tax (TTx). Foreign tourists will be required to pay a flat rate of MYR 10 per room per night regardless of accommodation star level. The TTx is to be paid upon check-in. Malaysians or permanent residents residing in Malaysia are exempted from TTx and is required to present a valid identification upon check-in for the exemption.
