Located approximately 80 kilometres west of Lahad Datu on Sabah's east coast, this pristine area is home to over 500 species of mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians, thriving in their untouched habitats amidst towering tropical trees, clinging lianas, exotic orchids, and lush epiphytes.

Birdwatching enthusiasts will be delighted by the chance to spot all of Borneo's 7 hornbill species along with other rare and exotic birds. This centre is a paradise for birding and bird photography, offering unmatched opportunities to capture these magnificent creatures in their natural settings.

Sample itinerary

Day 1 - Lahad Datu / Danum Valley Field Centre / Night Drive

Please note that the itinerary below is a suggested sample. Activities may be tailored to your interests and current conditions, in consultation with your nature guide upon arrival at DVFC.

Pick-up from Lahad Datu Airport or hotel is at 08:00 Hrs, followed by a 2.5-hour overland journey to Danum Valley Conservation Area. Enjoy the changing scenery as you pass from regenerating forests into Borneo’s untouched 130-million-year-old rainforest.

Upon arrival, register at the DVCA Reception and Information Building, then check in after a short briefing by DVFC staff. Lunch will be served at the dining hall.

After lunch, meet your nature guide to plan your stay. You may choose to rest or take a short nap before joining a mid-afternoon walk around the centre. This easy walk introduces you to the rainforest’s rich biodiversity, with chances to spot orangutans, red leaf monkeys, sambar deer, wild boars, hornbills, and more.

Return to the centre before sunset and enjoy dinner at 19:00 Hrs. After dinner, head out on a 4x4 night drive to search for nocturnal wildlife, weather permitting.

Day 2 - Rainforest Trekking / Night Jungle Walk

Begin your day with a 06:00 Hrs guided walk through the rainforest, a peaceful time to observe nature as it stirs to life. Return to the centre for a hearty breakfast, then take the option to explore a nearby trail at your own pace.

Spend the rest of the morning at leisure before enjoying lunch. In the afternoon, head out for another trek. A variety of trails are available, and your guide will help choose one that suits your fitness level and interests.

Return by late evening and catch the changing colours of the sky as daylight fades. After dinner, join your guide for a night walk to look for nocturnal wildlife (subject to weather conditions).

Day 3 - Danum Valley Exploration / Night Jungle Walk

Enjoy a full day in the forest with your nature guide, offering another great opportunity to spot wildlife and observe birdlife in their natural habitat. Explore the network of trails near the centre or, if you're up for it, opt for a longer hike. Your guide will assess your fitness level before proceeding with any extended treks.

Return to the centre in the late evening to freshen up before dinner. Afterwards, head out on another guided night walk in search of nocturnal wildlife (subject to weather conditions).

Day 4 - Hike To Bukit Atur / Danum Valley / Lahad Datu

Wake up as early as 04:30 Hrs for a 4x4 drive to Bukit Atur, where you may be among the first to witness the sun’s first light as it touches the valley, weather permitting. Afterwards, return to the centre for a hearty breakfast. You may choose to relax or explore a nearby trail.

Pack your belongings and check out before departing DVFC for your onward journey to Lahad Datu.

  • Please note that the itinerary provided in the DVFC packages serves as a sample, and you are encouraged to customize the activities after consulting with your nature guide upon arrival.
  • Please ensure you are holding an air ticket to Lahad Datu.
  • Cell phone coverage is available but limited depending on weather conditions and satellite function. Be prepared to have no coverage for some of your stay.
  • DVFC electricity is powered by generators. The generators will shut down from 2300 - 0700 hrs. Battery-powered lamps are provided in each room but you may wish to bring your own torchlight.
  • Effective as of 1st September 2017, the Tourism and Culture Ministry of Malaysia will be implementing a Malaysian Tourism Tax (TTX). Foreign tourists will be required to pay a flat rate of MYR 10 per room per night regardless of accommodation star level. The TTx is to be paid upon check-in. Malaysians or permanent residents residing in Malaysia are exempted from TTx and are required to present valid identification upon check-in for the exemption.

  • The power outlets at the centre are all UK 3-pin sockets. For electronics and appliances that do not have UK 3-pin plugs, you may wish to bring your own power adapters.
