11D10N Borneo Eco-Travel: Sepilok Orangutan, Kinabatangan, Sukau Rainforest Lodge, Danum Valley, Lankayan Island Dive Resort, and Shangri-La Rasa Ria

Upon your arrival at Sandakan Airport, you will be promptly transferred to the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre. Here, you'll watch an educational video about the orangutan, followed by a guided walk through the rainforest to observe their feeding at 1000hrs. You'll also have the chance to see young orangutans in the newly built enclosed nursery area. 

Next, visit the Borneo Sun Bear Conservation Centre to learn about efforts to protect the world’s smallest bear species. 

Following this, embark on a 2-hour journey by land to the award-winning Sukau Rainforest Lodge, offering the heights of eco-luxury along the banks of Kinabatangan River. 

In the afternoon, enjoy a river cruise, where you'll search for wildlife and birds using a boat with both outboard and electric motors. The second longest river in Malaysia, Kinabatangan River is considered a must-visit destination for wildlife encounters in Borneo. 

Dinner will be a candlelit affair overlooking the riverbank, followed by a presentation and discussion led by a knowledgeable naturalist. 

Start the day early at 0600hrs with a river cruise along the Kinabatangan River, heading towards Kelenanap Oxbow Lake to spot a variety of birds and wildlife. 

After breakfast, take a guided tour along the lodge’s Hornbill Boardwalk with the in-house naturalist. 

Later in the day, participate in an Orangutan Talk before enjoying lunch. 

In the afternoon, embark on another river cruise to explore more of the region’s diverse wildlife. 

After breakfast, return to Sandakan either by boat or land. 

Enjoy lunch before visiting the Rainforest Discovery Centre, where you can take in the view from the canopy walk and hanging bridge, and explore the botanical garden filled with various plant species. 

Later, transfer to your Sandakan accommodation, where you can relax for the remainder of the day. 

Check out of your Sandakan accommodation and take a 30-minute drive to Sandakan PSR Jetty. 

From there, board a speedboat to Lankayan Island, enjoying the scenic 90-minute ride across the ocean. 

Check in at Lankayan Island Dive Resort and rest. 

The day is yours to spend at your leisure! 

Take part in activities such as swimming, snorkelling, and ocean kayaking. 

After breakfast, check out from Lankayan Island and take a boat back to the jetty. 

From there, transfer by land to Sandakan. 

Visit Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary, where you can see Proboscis Monkeys, Small Clawed Otters, and Silver Leafed Monkeys in their natural environment. 

After lunch, head to your Sandakan accommodation for the night. 

Depart at 0830hrs for a 4.5-hour overland journey to Danum Valley Conservation Area (DVCA), passing through regenerating forests and an ancient 130-million-year-old rainforest. 

Upon arrival, register at the DVCA Reception & Information Building and check-in after a briefing by the staff. 

Enjoy lunch at the dining hall, then take a mid-afternoon walk around the centre to familiarise yourself with the rainforest and possibly spot orangutans, red leaf monkeys, and hornbills. 

Return to the centre by 1900hrs for dinner. 

After dinner, head out on a 4x4 night safari drive to spot nocturnal wildlife, weather permitting. 

Start your day early with morning nature and wildlife observation at 0600hrs, immersing yourself in the untouched rainforest. 

After breakfast, explore the trails around the centre or take some time to relax before lunch. 

In the afternoon, embark on another trek along one of the many surrounding trails. Trust your guide to choose a trail that is best suited to your fitness level. 

Return in the evening in time to watch the sunset. After dinner, join a night walk to spot nocturnal animals, if the weather allows. Some nocturnal wildlife you may have the opportunity to see include civets, clouded leopards, moonrats, and a wide range of frogs, vipers, and insects. 

Wake up early at 0430hrs for a 4x4 drive to Bukit Atur to witness the sunrise, or join a morning walk with your guide at 0600hrs. 

After breakfast, relax or explore nearby trails before checking out at 1030hrs. 

Transfer to Lahad Datu Airport for your flight to Kota Kinabalu. 

Upon arrival in Kota Kinabalu, proceed to Shangri-La Rasa Ria for check-in and a leisurely afternoon. 

Enjoy a luxurious breakfast and relax on Shangri-La Rasa Ria’s private beach. 

Take advantage of the resort’s amenities, including pools, a gym, and a golf course, or participate in optional activities such as rainforest hikes, kayaking, or bodyboarding (at additional cost). 

Explore a variety of dining options or join resort-organised tours and activities. 

After breakfast, check out and transfer back to Kota Kinabalu.
